Merrimack Soccer Club (Competitive) Program
The Merrimack Soccer Club was created to provide the children of Merrimack, NH the opportunity to play competitive travel soccer against players of similar commitment and desire from other towns, communities and regional teams within the New Hampshire Soccer League (NHSL).
Our club’s goal is to promote the game of soccer in a fun and positive atmosphere where our players can become the most technically skilled soccer players in the area. This will be accomplished by maintaining a soccer environment that teaches age appropriate soccer skills and sportsmanship by certified coaches, who will focus on total player development. Teams will typically stay together as the kids continue to develop on and off the field. This creates an environment where the kids become comfortable with each other, resulting in improved game play. The ultimate goal is for the kids to have a great time, stay active, and build character. MSC teams typically practice twice a week for an hour to an hour and a half and play one to two games on the weekend. Players can also expect to play in at least one tournament, if not more throughout the season. Tryouts for travel teams are held twice a year, once for the spring season and once for the fall season.
If you have any questions, please email us at travel@myasoccer.org
Q: How are Travel Teams formed?
A: All players who wish to be considered for a Travel Team must attend a tryout session. Coaches use this tryout session to evaluate all players in attendance and determine how to form teams for the upcoming season. Teams are formed based on a player’s birth year (2007 team for example).
Q: How much does Travel soccer cost?
A: Player registration is $125 (U8-U10) or $150 (U11 and older) per season. Players must also purchase their uniform, which is approximately $90. Uniforms are reusable for multiple seasons but may change style every 2 or 3 years based on product availability and updates. Need based financial assistance is available and applicants for assistance are kept strictly confidential.
Q: When do Travel Teams practice?
A: Travel Teams practice twice per week for 60-90 minutes during the season. Practice times are selected by the teams coach.
Q: When does the season start/end?
A: The Fall season starts the first weekend after Labor Day and runs through the first or second week in November. The Spring season starts in early April (field conditions permitting) and runs through the middle of June.
Q: What is the game schedule for Travel Teams?
A: Each Travel team will have a 7 or 8 game regular season in a local league. Half of those games will be home games and the other half will be away games. Most regular season games are on Saturdays, however, some may be on Sundays based on scheduling and team availability. Each team will also attend a tournament during the season – Columbus Day in the Fall and Memorial Day in the Spring. Tournaments have 3-4 games over the course of the weekend.
Q: How much travel is required?
A: Travel depends on the other teams in the league/division as well as which games are home versus away. However, in general most games are not farther than a 30-45 minute drive.
Q: What if I missed the tryout dates?
A: In order to be considered for a Travel team, all players MUST attend a tryout session. We will make every attempt to accommodate schedules for interested players and can have makeup tryouts, however, team formation happens immediately after the regularly scheduled tryouts, so players who can’t attend those sessions may be put on a waiting list.
Q: If my child played Travel in the Fall, are tryouts for the Spring season required?
A: Spring tryouts (normally held in January) are designed specifically for players who did not play Travel soccer in the preceding Fall season. Players who did play in the Fall season are not required to tryout again for the Spring season.
Q: What leagues do Travel teams play in?
A: The vast majority of our Travel teams play in the New Hampshire Soccer League (NHSL). If a team should advance beyond the level of competition offered by NHSL, there are options to play in the North Atlantic Youth Soccer League (NAYSL) or other regional leagues in the area. More information on NHSL or NAYSL can be found on their respective web-sites.
Q: Can my child be placed on a certain team?
A: Travel teams are formed by gender and age, and typically we have only one team per gender/age. In the case where multiple teams exist for a particular gender/age, player placement is determined by the coaches with oversight provided by the Travel Director and Soccer Board of Directors (as needed). As a general rule, parent evaluation of their own child is not a consideration when forming teams.
Q: What is EDP?
A: EDP stands for the Early Development Program and is the overarching term applied to Travel teams U10 and younger. These teams are primarily focused on player development and growth as opposed to winning games. Game scores and standings are not published by the league for these age groups and there are no playoffs at the end of the season.
Q: When does Travel soccer become competitive?
A: Travel soccer games become competitive at U11 - that’s when the league will publish game scores, maintain standings, and have playoffs culminating with a championship game.
Q: My child loves soccer but didn’t make a Travel team, what are my options?
A: MYA Soccer has an Academy Program designed to provide advanced training opportunities for players participating in the Rec program. The Academy Program is available for U6-U10 players, runs concurrent with the Rec Soccer season, and consists of 1 or 2 training sessions each week under the supervision of a professional trainer.
MYA Travel program is for Merrimack residents only. For more information on the MYA Travel Program please contact:
