The referees, especially the center referee, are responsible for each game. From the moment they enter the field before the game until after the last whistle blows, the referees are the final
arbitrator of the Laws of the Game.
The referees first and foremost responsibility is the safety of the players. The second responsibility is "equality," that is, enforcing the rules fairly.
The MYASP requires that all coaches, players and spectators respect the referee. The Parent's Code of Conduct requires this.
The referees, especially the youth referees, are learning their craft, just like the players on the field and the volunteer coaches. Of course there will be unpopular decisions made by a referee. There will be mistakes made by referees.
The MYASP doesn't accept a parent yelling "you screwed up" to a player on the field, nor are such comments tolerated when directed at a referee. Vocal but brief reactions to the play on the field are expected, including. spectatotors reacting to the decisions made by the referees. Keep the comments proper and constructive. In a few years the referee on the field may be your child.

Youth Referees
All of youth referees working with the MYASP are certified. All will have a "grade 8 patch." This means that the referee is at least 12 years old and has completed a 16 hour class on the Laws of the Game with a passing grade (75 or better) on the final exam. Every 2 years the referee will need to take an 8 hour class to stay current with the Laws of the Game.
A grade 8 patch allows a referee to work as either a Center or Assistant Referee. A grade 8 referee may work games for travel games as well as rec games.
Adult Referees
Adult referees volunteer their time. The MYASP tries to only use adults that too are certified. However, there are times when non certified referees are pressed into service.

The MYASP pays its youth referees $20 for CR and $15 for AR per game.
You will ref at sites in Merrimack. No long drives.
Play a game. Ref a game. All in the same day at the same location.
There is a MYASP representative at all sites. You are not left by yourself.
You receive some MYASP $$$ for consessions each day you work.

How to get a Referee Patch
You want to wear the yellow jersey? To become a patched referee you will need to attend a 16 hour class and pass a final 100 question exam.
You must be 12 years old at the start of the class.
Classes are mostly held during the "offseason" months in the Winter and Summer and hosted at various locations throughout the state. You may attend a class at any location.
