No! While having played soccer as a child helps, it isn't necessary to have experience to be a coach. If you get started with the younger age groups (U6/U8) you only need basic knowledge of the game. You can volunteer as an assistant coach and get paired with a more experienced coach to get your feet wet. There are also coaching courses available through the MYA and NHSA that are very helpful.

The most important quality for a coach to have is the willingness to get out on the field, have fun with the kids and teach them sportsmanship and teamwork.
